What is Mountaineering?

Many people enjoy participating in outdoor activities, and there are plenty of options for enthusiasts. For those that take part in outdoor adventures, there are some that undoubtedly offer significant challenges. One of these is mountaineering.

Not Getting Mountaineering Confused with Similar Activities

Sometimes the term mountaineering gets confused with similar activities. Most know that it refers to mountain climbing. But another activity that is similar to this is hiking up a mountain. Then, there is alpine climbing, which means climbing over different rocks to reach the peak. However, rock climbing can also take place indoors at commercial rock climbing establishments.


The true meaning of mountaineering means climbing a snow-covered mountain, with the aspiration of reaching a peak of that particular mountain. It often includes having to climb across ice and glaciers.

The Proper Instructors

For those that are going to participate in mountaineering, it means they need to be properly trained. This means relying on the expertise of instructors, who are skilled in handling the different aspects of the wilderness.

What Does Instruction Include?

Training for mountaineering includes learning how to develop several different skills in climbing techniques. It also includes:

  • How to sustain oneself in cold weather
  • Consuming enough calories to help the body with warmth and energy
  • Knowing how much fluid needs to be consumed
  • Winter camping skills
  • Setting up a shelter
  • Setting up a campsite

Several other things need to be learned for one to be able to mountaineer in a safe manner.

The History of Mountaineering

The task of climbing mountains dates way back. But, it must be remembered that peaks, at one time, were considered to be sacred. One of the first climbs recorded dates back to 1336, where Mont Ventoux was climbed by a famous Italian poet by the name of Petrarch.
